Saw a great example of how one defines beauty.

On returning from school one day, my seven year daughter announced that she thought she was not pretty at all. On being asked why she thought so resulted in this surprising answer - it was because she did not have a flat nose and small eyes!

Incidentally, about 90% of her classmates are of Chinese origin. 

The first concern was to quickly bring back a modicum of self worth by telling her that she was, in fact very beautiful, because she met  all the criteria of beauty of an Indian. 

What struck me later was - how could she  believe me, not having been to India for the last two years, and having to take only my word on the Indian concept of beauty!

On Dreams

Yesterday, in need of inexpensive nutrition, I stopped by at a small roadside hotel near a busy rail station in Mumbai. I was hungry so, oblivious of my surroundings, I attacked my food with gusto. In a short while, a tall, swarthy, middle-aged man plonked himself opposite me on my table. I value my solitude, so I was not a little irritated. Especially because there were other empty tables, and he could have had his choice of seating.  I stared at him, hoping to convey my displeasure and annoyance but he stared imperviously back at me. Not being in the mood for a conflict, I looked away. That look reminded me of a familiar face, though, and hoping to make something out of the situation, I asked him if we had met before, that I had seen him before and that was he in the movies? He seemed quite glad of my question and thanked me for having recognised me and said that he, in fact, was an actor. Childhood Stories: The Story of the Silent TV

My father was in the Army – which meant that we got transferred to a new city every two to three years. Army officers are usually packed off to areas furthest away from their homes and being from Punjab, we invariably found ourselves in far-flung states like Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. When television came to India, most of the content was in the local language, except for some time in the evening, when it was time for National programming. We therefore could not convince our dad to make the substantial investment in a television for so little returns. Consequently, we came late to the party, having bought our first TV in 1986, while vacationing in Patiala just after I had completed my Class X.
